How to apply for Director ID from outside Australia

Director IDs have recently been introduced to Australia to help prevent the use of false or fraudulent director identities. It is a director’s unique identifier allocated to a director for life. If you are an Australian director – even foreign director – or want to become one, and don’t have your director ID yet, you should apply now.

If you are based Overseas, you can ONLY apply for Director ID to ABRS with a PAPER FORM.

Application from outside Australia cannot be done online or over the phone.

  • Step 1: Fill in the application Paper Form
    For foreign directors, the application must be made by filling the downloadable paper form
  • Step 2: Gather your Certified Documents
    To verify your identity, you need to provide certified copies of two identity documents:

    • one Primary and one Secondary Identity Documents, or
    • two Primary Identity Documents

Only send copies of your identity documents. Do not send originals! All identity documents must be certified.

  • Step 3: Lodge your application for Director ID
    Send your application Paper Form together with certified copies of your current identification documents to:

Locked Bag 6000

As International Courier services usually do not deliver mail to PO Box addresses, we strongly recommend you send your application for Director ID through your LOCAL PARTNER in Australia, who will then send it per local mail to ABRS.

Application Deadlines for Director ID

When you must apply for your Director ID depends on the date your become a director:

Date you become a director                            Deadline to apply

  • On or before 31 Oct 2021                         By 30 Nov 2022
  • Between 1 Nov 2021 – 4 Apr 2022         Within 28 days of appointment
  • From 5 Apr 2022                                        Before appointment
